How to Find Your Carrie

If you've ever felt nobody understands what you're going through, consider this your sign that we're never as alone as we think we are.

That was a main reason I rarely talked about the muscle disability I was born with for over 30 years. I figured nobody would understand or relate. Through sharing about it online, I connected with Carrie.

Carrie lives in England, we're around the same age, and she and I were both born with the same rare muscle disorder, both worked in the arts and for music festivals (my life for 11+ years before becoming a speaker!), and both love everything sparkly. Her disability-focused IG bio included "Invisible Disability | Visible Sparkle" and I WISH I'd thought of that myself. ✨

I'm pretty sure that makes her my doppelganger somehow?

Carrie reached out to me on Instagram in January last year, we had a call, and realized how much we have in common. I was in the UK last August for my cousin's wedding, and we met up for an afternoon during my 2.5-day stay in London, my first time meeting someone with my disability in person, and a surreal experience I never imagined I'd have.

In my keynotes, I love sharing about connecting with Carrie. It made me so certain that anyone who's felt that nobody will understand or relate to them, also has a life or situation doppelganger out there.

To find them and to realize we're not alone, we need to share our experiences and what we're going through. Or at the very least, look for people sharing theirs.

Because I promise, your Carrie is definitely out there too.
